Guatapé, one of the 125 municipalities of Antioquia, is a beautiful destination ideal to visit at any time of the year. Guatapé, uno de los 125 municipios de Antioquia, es un bello destino ideal para visitar en cualquier época del año.

The sports that can be done here are, among others, of course: water sports (because of the proximity to the reservoir), hiking, mountain biking (because of the forest vegetation that surrounds the municipality) and horseback riding. Los deportes que se pueden realizar aquí son, entre otros, por supuesto: deportes acuáticos (por la cercanía al embalse), senderismo, ciclo montañismo (por la vegetación de bosque que rodea al municipio) y cabalgatas. 

It can be explored by foot for two or three hours and is made up of cobbled streets, colorful and picturesque houses that capture the eye's attention due to the plinths (drawings and paintings in high relief) that adorn their walls, narrating stories and capturing customs, flora, fauna, national symbols and the trades of the townspeople; it also contains double-height constructions in which wooden balconies stand out. In short, Guatapé is… a work of art inhabited by people who are always friendly and open to sharing their traditions and culture. Se puede recorrer caminando por un espacio de dos o tres horas y se compone de calles empedradas, coloridas y pintorescas casas que captan la atención de la vista por los zócalos (dibujos y pinturas en alto relieve) que adornan sus paredes, narrando historias y plasmando costumbres, la flora, fauna, símbolos patrios y los oficios de la gente del pueblo; también contiene construcciones de doble altura en las que sobresalen balcones de madera. En resumen, Guatapé es… una obra de arte habitada por personas siempre amables y abiertos a compartir sus tradiciones y cultura. 

A representative and important wonder of nature, the jewel that is housed in the place, is the Peñón de Guatapé -also known as "La piedra del Peñol"- it is a monolith (a large stone block) 220 meters high that is located in Guatapé, Antioquia, 70 km from Medellín. It is made up of feldspar, mica and quartz. The Rock is considered cultural heritage and is one of the most important tourist attractions to visit, being the tallest stone in Colombia. Una maravilla de la naturaleza representativa e importante, la joya que se alberga en el lugar, es el Peñón de Guatapé -conocido también como “La piedra del Peñol”- es un monolito (un gran bloque de piedra) de 220 metros de altura que se encuentra en Guatapé, Antioquia, a 70 km de Medellín. Se compone de feldespato, mica y cuarzo. El Peñón está considerado como patrimonio cultural y es uno de los atractivos turísticos más importantes para visitar, siendo la piedra más alta de Colombia. 

People can to arrive up to the top’s of it climbing between 702 and 740 steps for then they boast about the big damming’s view and all that surrounds it and, why not, to taste typical candies of the region and to buy craftsmanships before to initiate the descent. Las personas pueden llegar hasta la cima de este subiendo entre 702 y 740 escalones para luego jactarse de la gran vista de la represa y de todo lo que lo rodea y, por qué no, probar los dulces típicos de la región y comprar artesanías antes de iniciar el descenso. 

About the damming that surrounds the Stone of Peñol, it has more than 2.200 hectares of extension, several islands in green tones and a cross: historic symbol of the antique location of the town. Sobre el embalse que rodea a La piedra del Peñol, este tiene más de 2.200 hectáreas de extensión, varias islas en tonos verdes y una cruz: símbolo histórico de la antigua ubicación del pueblo. 

And to finish, some curious datums about the jewel of the municipality are: Y para finalizar, algunos datos curiosos sobre la joya del municipio son: 
  • The stone not only counts with 220 visible meters, except that it moreover has 2.500 meters of profundity, approximately. La piedra no solo cuenta con los 220 metros visibles, sino que tiene además 2.500 metros de profundidad aproximadamente.
  • On this find writing the syllable “GI”, vestige of the truncated intention of an antique local leader about to write big the name of the municipality “GUATAPÉ”. Sobre esta se encuentra escrita la sílaba “GI”, vestigio de la intención truncada de un antiguo líder local de escribir en grande el nombre del municipio “GUATAPÉ”.
  • The first to climb the stone was mister Luis Eduardo Villegas López, helped by misters Ramón Díaz and Pedro Nel Ramírez. What a great feat full of dangers! El primero en subir la piedra fue el señor Luis Eduardo Villegas López, ayudado por los señores Ramón Díaz y Pedro Nel Ramírez. ¡Qué gran hazaña llena de peligros! 
  • In a time was a pilgrimage center of people that arrive by feet or by mule. Give to reason to the people that consider this sacred place for its beauty, for peacefulness and happiness that to transmit. En un tiempo fue un centro de peregrinaje de personas que llegaban a pie o en mula. Se les da la razón a las personas que consideran a este lugar sagrado por su belleza, por la tranquilidad y felicidad que transmite.
